EU launches website on beneficiaries of EU funds
02nd October 2008
On 02 October the EU “financial transparency system” was launched, which consists of a website providing information on the beneficiaries of EU subsidies. A detailed search engine allows free access to details of who receives EU funds managed by the Commission, but also by its executive agencies. 28 000 entries on Commission-run programmes are offered.
During the official launch ceremony of the website, Commission Vice-President Siim
"We have always claimed that EU programmes benefit individuals, companies, and civil society across and beyond the 27 Member States. But this new part of the European Transparency Initiative enables any EU citizen to check what and when they want, and this allows for a very effective form of accountability – at the Commission's level, but also for programme managers throughout the EU".
Only data for 2007 is available on the website at the moment, but further information will be put online in the future, until 2010, when the system will be enhanced to also include the procurement contracts from the Commission for its day-to-day administration.
